David Stock’s Ninth String Quartet premiered with the Arianna Quartet at theTouhill Center for the Arts this past Friday, March 2. The public unveiling of Stock’s tenth major work (including Suenos de Sefarad) for string quartet enjoyed a sizeable and enthusiastic audience at the Touhill on the campus of the University of Missouri St. Louis. The evening included a pre-concert talk between the Arianna musicians and composer where Stock explained his fondness for the string quartet medium’s flexibility and transparency. He quipped to the audience it wouldn’t be the worst thing if he were somehow “doomed” to only compose string quartets for the rest of his career. Indeed after a successful premiere with more performances by Arianna to follow on tour, one looks forward to Stock’s next quartet before too long.
