The Oregon Symphony will perform David Schiff’s “Infernal” on Nov. 7th -8th, 2015. Commissioned and recorded by Seattle Symphony Orchestra/ Gerard Schwarz, Starbucks Label, “Infernal” came about from a Seattle Symphony project to produce a series of recordings containing new contemporary works based on an older piece of music. As the composer explains, “I thought for about 30 seconds and then said I would base my piece on the ‘Infernal Dance’ from Stravinsky’s ‘Firebird Suite’. My piece, ‘Infernal,’ is a double homage to Stravinsky and Henry Mancini.” This performance will be the first given in several years by the major orchestra of Schiff’s home state.
The composer’s new work “Ducal Duo” will be premiered by David Shifrin on clarinet and Darrell Grant playing piano on November 6th, 2015 as part of “Duke Ellington and Billy Strayhorn: A Celebration.” at Reed College in Portland, Oregon.
